Italian driving theory test
A written test comes before you drive alone. This page states what the governing decree actually sets — not exam-prep advice.
The test
Questions, time and the error allowance
The decree governing the test for categories A1, A2, A, B and BE fixes three numbers, in the same operative sentence.
Each statement is answered true or false. The test is passed while wrong answers stay at or under 4; past that count it fails outright, with no intermediate score.
It applies to categories A1, A2, A, B and BE. The two decrees this page reads do not name category AM (mopeds): this page carries no rule for that category.
D.M. 19 dicembre 2012, art. 1 co. 2 (categories B1, B, BE) · D.M. 8 gennaio 2013, art. 1 co. 2 (categories A1, A2, A) — Gazzetta Ufficiale.
Who administers the test
The tests are conducted by staff of the Dipartimento per i trasporti, la navigazione e i sistemi informativi e statistici (Ministero delle infrastrutture e dei trasporti), under the directives the decree itself sets.
Codice della Strada (Highway Code), art. 116(1) and art. 121(3).
Retaking the test
A time limit on the application, not a gap between attempts.
The Highway Code sets a six-month term from the application within which the test must be passed, and no more than two attempts are allowed inside that window. It does NOT fix — in the articles and the two decrees this page reads — a minimum waiting period between one attempt and the next, nor an absolute cap on attempts once that window has run or the application renewed.
What is not written down
No minimum interval, no absolute cap
Do not confuse this with the six-month term above: that governs the application as a whole, not the gap between two tests.
Highway Code art. 122(1)
The Highway Code does not fix, in the articles read here, a separate validity term for a theory pass awaiting the practical test — the six-month term above governs the application, not the passed test.

Who can drive, and from what age
The enrolment age and the licence-issue age are two different questions; the table below states the one that closes the file: issue.

How long the licence runs
Not one number: how long it runs depends on the age of whoever receives or renews it.
Renewal still depends on holding the required physical and psychological fitness — it is not automatic once the term runs out.
