What an Italian traffic fine actually costs, and what it does to your licence

The Codice della Strada does not set a tariff. It sets a corridor from a minimum to a maximum, and the figure you pay is the minimum. Here is the corridor, the payable figure, the points and the deadlines, with the article beside every number.

The figures

Three numbers

These are the three that decide what an Italian driver does in the days after the notice arrives.

How it works

How to read an Italian fine

  1. Read the corridor, not one figureThe article states a minimum and a maximum. It is the MINIMUM you pay: art. 202 calls it «una somma pari al minimo fissato dalle singole norme» — a sum equal to the minimum the individual provision sets.
  2. Find the date on the noticeThe clock starts at roadside service if the notice was handed to you, and at postal service if it came in the post. They are two different dates.
  3. Check whether the licence is touchedPoints, suspension, or both. Where an accessory sanction applies, the five-day reduction is not available at all.

Finding your row

Got a fine? Start with what is written on the notice itself.

The three things that decide everything — the article charged, the date the clock starts from, and the accessory sanctions — are already on the paper in your hand.

  1. The article chargedIt sets the corridor, the points and the accessories.
  2. The date the clock startsRoadside or postal service: two different dates.
  3. The accessory sanctionsSuspension or confiscation rules out the five-day reduction.

Fine catalogue

The catalogue, by category

Ten categories, each with a table built straight off the articles. Where the statute sets no ceiling for a row, the column stays empty: we do not invent a maximum.

What we found

What the Codice della Strada does NOT say

Four things readers take for granted that are not in the text, or are not where they look for them. Each with its article, and with the exact place the rule actually lives.

Newly qualified

There is no article about doubling points for newly qualified drivers

The rule exists, but it lives in the CLOSING NOTE of the table annexed to art. 126-bis — outside the article and outside art. 117. Anyone looking where it is natural to look finds nothing — including us: an earlier pass of this same research concluded the rule was absent, after checking both articles and the extracted table in full. That was wrong, and the retraction is on the record.

Points

Points are subtracted from a balance, not accumulated

This is the inverse of the accrual model most cross-border readers bring with them. And the highest reachable figure is written nowhere: it is the sum of two provided values, and we show it as derived.

Criminal threshold

Above the threshold there is no reduced payment at all

Not because a provision forbids it, but because above the threshold the act is no longer an administrative offence: it is a crime punished by ammenda and arresto. No reduced payment, no further reduction, no ordinary window. That art. 202 cannot reach that band is, however, our inference from its wording, not an express exclusion.

2027

No 2027 figure exists yet

Every amount on this site is bounded by a decree due by the end of 2026, effective the following year, indexed to an ISTAT variation that will only be ascertained once the two-year period closes. The index does not exist, the decree does not exist, and we do not even know the sign of the variation: the last comparable period was negative.

In brief

Points come off — they do not build up

An Italian licence starts at a full allocation and goes down. Readers arriving from Germany or France expect the opposite and get the arithmetic backwards.

Method note: these questions do not come from a measured question corpus. Italian question-mining returned no usable rows, so the set is grounded in the statute and in observed search results — stated rather than implied.
