Paying it

How it is paid

Payable

This is not a discount: art. 202 calls this sum «una somma pari al minimo fissato dalle singole norme» — a sum equal to the minimum the individual provision sets, i.e. the floor of the charged article's own corridor.

Within 5 days

It is the exception, not the rule: a large share of the catalogue carries confiscation of the vehicle or suspension of the licence, and in those cases this reduction does not exist.

What we found

The amounts are bounded by a decree that is due

Change pending

The decree is due by 1 December 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2027, indexed to the ISTAT variation for the 2025-2026 two-year period. We predict no figure: the index cannot be ascertained until the period closes, the decree does not exist, and the mechanism's suspension has already been extended several times. A predicted figure here would be an invention.

Art. 195 co. 3 CdS; L. 197/2022 art. 1 co. 497, as amended by D.L. 31 December 2025 no. 200 art. 9 co. 1

In brief

One English word, several Italian offences

"Parking fine" covers things Italian law treats very differently, and the difference decides what you owe. Art. 158 separates stopping from parking, separates two-wheelers from everything else, and then splits by which prohibition was breached — each combination with its own corridor. A notice for overstaying in a paid bay and a notice for occupying a space reserved for a disabled driver are both "parking fines" in English and are not remotely the same instrument in Italian.

The heaviest row in our data set is the reserved space, and art. 158 co. 4-bis prices it twice in one sentence. For mopeds and two-wheeled motorcycles the corridor is from € 165 to € 660, € 165 payable; for every other vehicle, a car included, it is from € 330 to € 990, € 330 payable. Either way it is 4 points on the licence — one of the few parking offences that touches the licence at all.

A structural detail worth carrying with you: art. 158 co. 7 provides that the sanction applies for each calendar day the violation continues. A car left in the wrong place over a weekend is not one event with one amount by default.

Background

Blue lines, white lines, and the rules that are not in the statute

Italian kerbside markings carry meaning: white bays are generally free, blue bays are paid, yellow bays are reserved for a named category. What the parking meter charges, when the paid hours run, whether residents are exempt and whether a display disc is required are all decided by the comune, not by the Codice della Strada — which is why no national table can answer "how much is parking in Florence".

What the statute does supply is the consequence when the local rule is breached, and that is the part this site models. If the notice cites art. 158 with a comma and a letter, that combination is what fixes the corridor. If it cites a municipal regulation instead, the amount comes from the comune's own instrument and our tables are not the right source for it.

The same split explains a common misreading of Italian parking enforcement: an expired ticket in a blue bay and a car parked where stopping is prohibited outright are not neighbouring rows on one ladder. They are different provisions with different consequences, and only one of them is in the statute at all.

Points attach to the conduct, not to the sanctioning comma

The points table annexed to art. 126-bis frequently cites the comma that describes the prohibited conduct rather than the comma that imposes the fine — for the reserved-space offence it cites the underlying art. 158 co. 2 letter, not co. 4-bis, which is what actually imposes the penalty. That is how the table is built throughout, and it is why a one-to-one mapping of fine rows to point values goes wrong if you assume the two use the same address.

In detail

Windows, and what a windscreen slip is

Where a notice is served on you, the 60 days window and the 5 days further reduction of 30% run exactly as they do for any other administrative penalty in the Codice.

The slip left under a wiper is worth understanding separately. It is not always the notice itself — Italian enforcement bodies frequently leave a preliminary advice and follow it with formal service by post, which is when the deadlines start. If you paid on the strength of the slip, keep the receipt; if you did not, expect the letter, and treat the letter as the document that carries the dates.

For a hire car, the rental company will normally be served, will pass on the sum with its own administrative charge, and will identify the driver to the authority. Art. 196 is what makes the owner jointly liable in the first place, and it gives whoever pays a right of recourse against the actual offender.

Our parking table is deliberately narrow

The catalogue on this site carries a representative subset of the statute's parking provisions, not every combination of comma and letter art. 158 contains. Where a row is not here, we do not synthesise it from a neighbouring one, and where a category has no sourced rows at all we say that on its own page rather than filling the table from elsewhere.
