The Italian fine notice

Everything you need to understand the fine is already on the paper. This page names the fields one by one, in the words printed on them.

What we do not do

We do not look up your fine and we take no payments

We have no access to any register of notices. Payment goes through pagoPA, your comune's portal or the post office; what is here is what the notice number they will ask for looks like, and which deadlines you are inside.

The paper

The notice's fields, one by one

Notice number
The identifier a payment is matched against. It is the datum any portal will ask you for.
Notice type
It states which article was charged: the field that fixes the corridor, the points and the accessories.
Notice series
It distinguishes blocks of notices issued by the same enforcement body.
Date of roadside or postal service
The date the clock starts from. Two different fields, and only one of them applies to your case.
Enforcement body
Who issued the notice, and therefore who is paid and who is written to.
Recorded speed
On speeding notices: the number the art. 345 reduction starts from.

The service deadlines

The exact day counts for the two art. 201 deadlines are not yet in our data set, and until they are we do not write them: every figure on this site comes from the data, not from the page's prose. We are not saying the statute is silent — the rule exists and the deadlines are in it; we are saying where our model currently reaches.

If the deadline passes without service, the obligation to pay the sum is extinguished (art. 201).

If the notice is for speeding

The «velocità rilevata» field is the starting point: the art. 345 reduction applies to that number, and only then is the band chosen. You can redo the arithmetic on your own notice.

What we found

The amounts are bounded by a decree that is due

Change pending

The decree is due by 1 December 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2027, indexed to the ISTAT variation for the 2025-2026 two-year period. We predict no figure: the index cannot be ascertained until the period closes, the decree does not exist, and the mechanism's suspension has already been extended several times. A predicted figure here would be an invention.

Finding your row

Everything that decides the outcome is already on the paper

An Italian traffic ticket is a «verbale di contestazione», and it is dense, printed in Italian, and organised around a small number of fields that do all the work. You do not need to read the whole document. You need four entries, and they are always there.

The article charged — usually printed near «norma violata» or in the description of the offence — decides everything else: the corridor, the points, and whether an accessory sanction attaches. The date entries, «data di contestazione» for a notice handed to you at the roadside and «data di notificazione» for one served by post, decide when your deadlines run; only one of them applies to your case. The enforcement body, «organo accertatore», decides who you pay and who you write to. And the notice number is what any payment is matched against.

On a speeding notice there is a fifth: «velocità rilevata», the recorded speed. That is the number the art. 345 reduction applies to, and the number our calculator wants — not the excess.

Paying it

Paying it from outside Italy

The payable figure is the corridor's floor — art. 202 makes the minimum the sum that closes the matter — and the window is 60 days from the date on the notice. Inside the first 5 days a further 30% applies, unless the offence carries confiscation of the vehicle under art. 210 co. 3 or a suspension of the licence, in which case it does not apply at all.

There is no single national payment page. Italian traffic penalties are collected by the body that issued them — a comune's police force, the Polizia Stradale, the Carabinieri — and the notice itself carries the correct references: the pagoPA reference where the body uses it, the comune's own portal where it has one, or a postal account. Those printed references are the instructions; a generic "pay Italian fines here" service is an intermediary, not the authority.

From abroad, timing is the risk rather than the mechanism. For non-cash payments what counts legally is the date the administration's account is credited, not the date you initiated the transfer, and the rule allows 2 days for that credit to arrive past the deadline. An international transfer routed through a correspondent bank can eat that comfortably, so treat the deadline as the credit date and work backwards.

Keep the confirmation. A payment that was made and cannot be evidenced is, for practical purposes, a payment that was not made.

If the vehicle was registered abroad

Art. 207 lets the officer take the reduced payment on the spot from a foreign-registered vehicle. Where that does not happen, a deposit is required: measured against the maximum of the applicable range for a non-EU plate, and against the reduced-payment figure itself where the vehicle is registered in an EU or EEA state. If no deposit is paid the vehicle can be held administratively until it is, for no longer than the ceiling co. 3 states. We name that ceiling's provision rather than printing a day count our data set does not carry.

How it works

Service deadlines, and the consequence of missing them

Where an offence could not be contested on the spot — the camera cases, an absent driver, an unattended vehicle — the notice must be served within the period art. 201 co. 1 sets, and a longer period applies to service on a person resident abroad. The article states those periods; our data set carries the art. 202 payment windows and not the art. 201 service clocks, so we do not print them. That is a limit of our model, not a silence in the law: the deadlines exist and they are in that comma.

The consequence, though, is worth stating exactly, because it is unusually strong. Under art. 201 co. 5 the obligation to pay is EXTINGUISHED as against a person on whom the notice was not served within the prescribed period. Not postponed, not reduced — extinguished. If your notice arrived very late, the date of service against the date of the offence is the first thing to check.

This is also why the dates on the paper matter more than the dates you remember. A notice served late is a different legal position from a notice you received late because it went to an old address, and the record of service is what distinguishes them.

Ignoring it does not make it go away

Where neither payment nor an appeal has been made in time, art. 203 co. 3 turns the notice itself into an enforceable title for a sum above the reduced-payment figure, together with procedural costs, and art. 206 routes collection through the ordinary machinery for unpaid public debts with a surcharge accruing per six-month period. Our data set carries neither multiplier; the articles are named so they can be checked.

The owner is liable alongside the driver

Art. 196 makes the vehicle's owner jointly liable for the sum due unless they prove the vehicle was used against their will, and gives whoever pays a full right of recourse against the actual offender. That is the provision behind a rental company paying and re-billing you, and behind the separate duty on an owner to identify the driver under art. 126-bis co. 2.
