Speeding

The four art. 142 bands, and what each carries beyond the amount.

What a row contains

Each row carries the corridor the article sets, the sum actually due — the floor of that corridor, under art. 202 — the points deduction and any accessory sanctions, with the article beside it. Where the statute sets no maximum for that row, the column stays empty rather than holding a figure that does not exist.

The four art. 142 bands

The bands are read on the km/h over the limit calculated AFTER the art. 345 reduction — the same table the calculator uses, with the same figures.

What we found

The amounts are bounded by a decree that is due

Change pending

The decree is due by 1 December 2026 and takes effect on 1 January 2027, indexed to the ISTAT variation for the 2025-2026 two-year period. We predict no figure: the index cannot be ascertained until the period closes, the decree does not exist, and the mechanism's suspension has already been extended several times. A predicted figure here would be an invention.

Finding your row

How to read the speeding-fine table

This table is CdS art. 142's scale, in 4 bands, and every band is read off one quantity: km/h OVER the limit — not the recorded speed, not the limit, the difference between them, and only after the art. 345 reduction has been taken. A reader who looks for their row starting from the large number printed on the notice almost always lands one band above the one they were actually charged under.

Each row carries four separate things and they are worth keeping apart. The corridor is the statutory range between a minimum and a maximum. The amount payable is the reduced-payment figure — the one that closes the matter now. The points come from the table annexed to art. 126-bis, which is a different source from the article itself. The suspension, where there is one, is an accessory penalty and not a surcharge.

The bands run from up to 10 km/h over the limit, where the amount payable is € 42 and no points are deducted, up to more than 60 km/h over the limit, where the amount payable is € 845, the deduction is 10 points and the suspension is 6 months. The step that matters most sits between them: more than 40 and not more than 60 km/h over the limit is the first band that reaches the licence, with a suspension of 1 month.

How it works

The reduction is applied before the band is chosen

The order of operations decides the row, and the row decides everything else. The art. 345 co. 2 reduction — 5% of the recorded value, with a floor of 5 km/h — comes off first, and only the result is compared with the limit. Up to 100 km/h the flat floor is the more favourable of the two; above it, the percentage is.

This is why two drivers stopped at the same recorded speed on different limits can end up in different bands, and why an excess that looks small can fall below the first band and produce no speeding penalty at all. This site's calculator applies exactly that sequence, on exactly these figures.

One qualification about the measuring method, because it changes the rule and not merely the device: co. 3 of the same art. 345 sets a distinct regime for average speed computed between two points, with percentages of its own. That regime is not modelled in our calculation — a statement about our tool, not an observation about the statute.

The corridor and the amount payable are not two prices in disagreement

They are two numbers belonging to the same offence: the range the article sets, and the reduced-payment figure. When you compare your notice against a table read elsewhere, check which of the two columns you are looking at first — it is the most common reason one offence appears to have two prices.
